It has been a very good week l

Our spiritual programs for discipleship are taking root slowly. We are using short stories about Jesus in the NT and having them paraphrased by the leaders and then retold by the small group members. Then there are four questions that are asked to promote discussion amongst the group. What do we learn about Jesus, what is Jesus teaching his disciples, what is Jesus teaching me, and what can I learn about how Jesus discipled his disciples so that I can be a better disciple maker. Please pray that the lessons will be good and that people will be changed and excited about the truth.

We are meeting two times a week with our chaplains trying to teach this method of Bible study.

I have had many interesting surgeries in the past week. We seem to see more and more serious motorcycle injuries. Hips, knees mostly. I did one this last week and it took several hours. We tried to rod the femur but the pieces of the knee joint were not help strongly by the rod, so in the middle of the operation we changed our plan and put on a large plate and screws. It was the only surgery we did that day as a result. We try to finish by four pm. The chief resident Frehun and I did it and we were both very tired after it was finished.

We also operated on an elbow that had been fractured and dislocated for a year. The young man had very little elbow motion. We took his elbow apart and put it back together again. It was a very big operation. We put a pin in the elbow to try to hold it in place for two weeks , then we will take the pin out and start moving the elbow again. Getting the patients here to do their own PT is a big job. Many are afraid to move their joints and end up with stiffness despite our best attempts. Frehun is getting very proficient doing brachial plexus blocks(injection of local anesthesia just above the collar bone) and we do most upper extremity work with those blocks so that patients are awake and breathing on their own. We do lower extremity work with spinal anesthesia and this works nicely even for older children.

Thanks for supporting us in this exciting ministry

Dear friends:
As we prepare to return to Ethiopia after our time in the U.S., we are encouraged to put all our burdens on the Lord and to praise Him for the steps forward.
Since returning to the States May 27th, we have been speaking at churches, small groups and a local Rotary Club.  We saw each of our children and attended two family weddings. Duane experienced some high blood pressure this summer and it delayed our return but also alerted us to a need to clarify and limit our responsibilities. Our church was so helpful. It trained us in discipleship methods, management skills and personal relationships. We hopefully return with a plan to be more effective and deal with the many stresses of a mission hospital.
Dr. Paul Gray, his wife Becca and baby son arrived in Soddo in August. He is a general surgeon who will help lead the surgical residency program and will be a big help to Duane.
