{"id":1110,"date":"2014-01-30T12:05:53","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T12:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/?p=1110"},"modified":"2017-10-12T20:20:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T20:20:27","slug":"on-her-own-two-feet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/am\/on-her-own-two-feet\/","title":{"rendered":"On Her Own Two Feet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine being 27 years old and having never walked upright. \u00a0That was the plight of Mihret. \u00a0She had been born with a congenital knee dislocation in both legs that made it impossible for her to stand on her own two legs. \u00a0I saw her in the ER one day recently. \u00a0She came from Addis Ababa &#8211; the capital city five hours away. \u00a0And she had heard that our hospital was working miracles for people who had never walked. \u00a0 Her entire life, Mihret had crawled on her hands and knees. \u00a0She wore flip-flops on her hands to protect them from the hot city pavement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1107\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/118860296\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1107 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/crawling-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"This is how Mihret got around her entire life.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is how Mihret got around her entire life.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She was poor, and didn&#8217;t even have enough money to get x-rays taken of both knees. \u00a0We worked out a deal so she could at least get the x-rays and talk to our orthopedic surgeon about treatment options. \u00a0Since birth, her dislocated knees had only flexed in the wrong direction, making it impossible to stand. \u00a0But Dr. Anderson saw her in the clinic and felt like if her knees could be fused, she could stand, and even walk with assistance.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#8217;t have a penny to pay for such a surgery, but our Benevolent Fund covered her.<\/p>\n<p>A week after admission, she underwent the first surgery on the left leg. \u00a0A complex procedure that lasted hours and involved putting a rod through her femur, bridging the distorted knee, and going into the tibia. \u00a0Mihret lost a lot of blood, an issue complicated by the fact that her blood type was O negative &#8211; the most rare type. \u00a0But she got transfused, and recovered for three weeks before having the right side done. \u00a0According to Dr. Anderson, &#8220;With the experience on the left side, we were able to do\u00a0the right side without as much bleeding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just a few days after that, for the first time in her life, Mihret stood upright on her own two legs.<\/p>\n<p>We have a weekly chapel service at the hospital on Wednesday morning that is attended by most of our hospital staff.\u00a0 We gave Mihret the opportunity to attend chapel, but not just attend. \u00a0To walk down the center aisle.\u00a0 Never before has our staff reacted to a patient&#8217;s recovery like they did with her.\u00a0 There was exuberant cheering and applause, and some of our staff cried as Mihret gave thanks to them and to God.\u00a0\u00a0 A day of rejoicing at Soddo Christian Hospital that will not soon be forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>All of this was possible because of our Benevolent Fund.\u00a0 And you can be a part!\u00a0 We are actively recruiting donors to give on a recurring basis.\u00a0 Right now, we are looking for 100 donors to pledge $100 per month for the next year, so that more like Mihret can get life-transforming treatment.\u00a0 We are giving ourselves 100 days to find these donors.\u00a0 Join the team today!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine being 27 years old and having never walked upright. \u00a0That was the plight of Mihret. \u00a0She had been born [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":1114,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[79],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1110","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-patient-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
