What is the \u201cbrain drain\u201d anyway?\u00a0 In developing countries all over the world, the \u201cbrain drain\u201d refers to the tendency of qualified and skilled workers to leave the country in search of greener pastures.\u00a0 To America, to Europe.\u00a0 The salary of a physician in the USA may be 100 times that of his counterpart in the developing world.\u00a0 Is it any wonder that so many leave?<\/p>\n

And yet, the consequences are felt by the countries they leave behind.\u00a0 The people in those countries long for skilled engineers to design their infrastructure.\u00a0 For skilled physicians and surgeons to treat their medical problems.\u00a0 For talented musicians and artist to elevate their culture.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"Physicians<\/a><\/p>\n

In health care, the effects are especially acute.\u00a0 People\u2019s lives are at stake.\u00a0 The minister of health for Ethiopia has even famously said that there are more Ethiopian physicians in Chicago<\/em> than in Ethiopia itself!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So the country is taking on the challenge head on.\u00a0 Thirteen new medical schools were opened in the past two years.\u00a0\u00a0 But this just means more junior level doctors who will also be looking for the exits.<\/p>\n

Unless\u2026<\/p>\n

We can train them in a specialty.\u00a0 You see, the vast majority of Ethiopian medical school graduates (general practitioners, or GPs, they are called) are looking to advance their education by further training.\u00a0 Just like in the US and other places, they want to do a postgraduate residency.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s Obstetrics\/Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Pediatrics, or whatever.\u00a0 They are not content to be only graduated GPs.\u00a0 They want that further training.<\/p>\n

And so, Soddo Christian Hospital is actively battling the brain drain as well.\u00a0 We have a five year General Surgery residency that is fully accredited by Ethiopia\u2019s Higher Education Authority and COSCESA \u2013 the College of Surgeons of Central, East, and South Africa. \u00a0We are actively discipling them with the Word of God.\u00a0 As they study Jesus\u2019 heart for the \u201cleast of these\u201d, they are motivated to use their skills to alleviate the crisis in their own nation. \u00a0Not leave for another country. \u00a0Yes, that’s right.\u00a0 Our graduates stay in Ethiopia!\u00a0 And so, we see Dr. Frehun in Addis, and Dr. Haile in Asela and Dr. Tedi here in Soddo training more surgeons.\u00a0 \u00a0By God\u2019s grace, all of our graduates have stayed home!<\/p>\n
