{"id":1513,"date":"2014-09-25T11:51:49","date_gmt":"2014-09-25T11:51:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/?p=1513"},"modified":"2014-09-25T11:51:49","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T11:51:49","slug":"history-of-the-mission-to-soddo-pt-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/am\/history-of-the-mission-to-soddo-pt-1\/","title":{"rendered":"History of the Mission to Soddo, Pt. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1515\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Thomas-Lambie.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1515 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Thomas-Lambie.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Thomas Lambie\" width=\"244\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Thomas Lambie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At SCH, we are standing on the shoulders of Christian pioneer missionaries and missionary doctors who went before us.\u00a0 As we approach our ten-year anniversary in a few months, we thought we\u2019d take a look at where we began, and how far God has brought us.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Thomas Lambie was a medical missionary with the American Presbyterian Mission working among the Sudanese Nuer people.\u00a0 In 1918, he became the first American missionary in Ethiopia when he sailed up the Baro River and began working among the people of the Wellega region.\u00a0 He labored there for the next 10 years, founding a hospital, a school, and a vibrant church.\u00a0 At this point, he combined forces with two other missionaries \u2013 Albert Rhoad and George Buxton &#8211; and founded Abyssinian Frontiers Mission.<\/p>\n<p>Now at that time, Christianity had not made its way into the southern part of Ethiopia.\u00a0 At least fifty different people groups occupied the south, and most were engaged in animistic worship and witchcraft.\u00a0 Some accounts say they were devoted to the occult and the \u201cworship of Satan\u201d.\u00a0 Dr. Lambie and his colleagues were deeply burdened by this and desired to penetrate this area with the Gospel. \u00a0Abyssinian Frontiers Mission merged with the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM), and was given permission to set up a mission station in the South.\u00a0 The most logical place at that time was Soddo.<\/p>\n<p>The governor of Soddo was a man named Dejazmatch Yigezu who providentially had been a patient of Dr. Lambie\u2019s in Wellega.\u00a0 He remembered the doctor, and welcomed the missionaries. \u00a0(In addition, the missionaries had the support of Emperor Haile Selassie since the magistrates of Wellega had spoken highly of them). \u00a0The mission station in Soddo was established by 1929, and evangelistic efforts were spreading out from there to Sidamo (Yirga Alem), and Gamo Gofa (Arba Minch).<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that Soddo was chosen as the main hub because of its <em>easy access<\/em> to Addis Ababa.\u00a0 At that time, it took two weeks with a mule caravan to reach Soddo from Addis.\u00a0 But this was considered a good distance for fetching supplies, and yet still to be a good launching point to reach the South!<\/p>\n<p>In the next post, we&#8217;ll tell you how the Church in Soddo began under the mission work of the Lambies and others&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>[ois skin=&#8221;Blog Post Share&#8221;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At SCH, we are standing on the shoulders of Christian pioneer missionaries and missionary doctors who went before us.\u00a0 As [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":1517,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[75,78],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-missionary-medicine","category-soddo"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
