{"id":688,"date":"2013-08-20T07:23:35","date_gmt":"2013-08-20T07:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/?p=688"},"modified":"2021-11-18T16:56:43","modified_gmt":"2021-11-18T21:56:43","slug":"ways-we-reach-the-poorest-of-the-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/am\/ways-we-reach-the-poorest-of-the-poor\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Ways We Are Reaching the Poorest of the Poor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/woman-and-son.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/woman-and-son-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"woman-and-son\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Being a mission hospital means taking care of the poor. \u00a0We are commanded to do this by Jesus, and it is something we desire to do. \u00a0If we offer free care, we will be inundated with patients. \u00a0How could we possibly treat them all? \u00a0If we charge for the care, we may overlook many who are very poor. \u00a0What can we do?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First<strong>, everyone is expected to pay something.<\/strong> \u00a0Even if it is only a few cents. \u00a0It is simply not sustainable for us to provide free care. \u00a0Indeed, most Africans have a social safety net made up of family, friends, church members, etc. who can contribute to their medical expenses. \u00a0However, we recognize that this will not be enough for some patients. \u00a0For them, we have a Benevolent Fund that can cover their costs.<\/li>\n<li>We have a committee of nationals who evaluate patients and their eligibility for <strong>the Benevolent Fund<\/strong>. \u00a0In a country like Ethiopia, where many in the population live on less than $1 per day, it can be difficult to sort out who are the poorest among the poor. \u00a0Particularly for Westerners working here. \u00a0Relative to our background, everyone seems poor, and we would likely put everyone on the Benevolent Fund. \u00a0That is why it is so crucial to have nationals evaluate these situations on a case-by-case basis.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">We <strong>lower costs<\/strong> as much as possible by using expatriate specialist staff who are funded separately through their respective mission agencies. \u00a0We still have to pay for all the operating costs of the hospital, the nursing staff, our national doctors, and supplies. \u00a0But we offset these costs with donations and some volunteer staff. \u00a0Much of our equipment is donated which lowers capital expenses for the hospital and this is passed on to patients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The rural poor in Africa have less than a 10% chance of seeing a doctor in their lifetime. \u00a0The medical services simply do not exist for the vast numbers of people. \u00a0(Ethiopia alone has close to 100 million inhabitants.) \u00a0Ultimately,<strong> it comes down to training.<\/strong> \u00a0We are training surgeons, physicians, medical students, and nurses. \u00a0If we are truly going to expand our reach to the poorest of the poor, we must increase capacity in the face of such great need.<\/li>\n<li>We are going out<strong> into the community<\/strong> with Community Health Evangelism, Helicopter Outreaches to the T&#8217;ara people, and rural prenatal clinics.
