You don&#8217;t have Idraparinux?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rx-meds.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-924 alignright\" alt=\"rx-meds\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rx-meds-300x300.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>What kinds of medications are available at an African mission hospital, and from whom do you procure them? \u00a0These are questions that we get asked a lot. \u00a0Here are two lists. \u00a0Five things we have, and five things we don&#8217;t! \u00a0Most of our medications are imported from Europe and Asia. \u00a0A few are made locally in Ethiopia. \u00a0One thing we can&#8217;t use is expired meds &#8211; it&#8217;s prohibited by law &#8211; so even though we&#8217;d like to take these off your hands, please don&#8217;t send them to us!<\/p>\n<p>Five medications we have:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Most antibiotics! \u00a0 We have penicillins, 3rd generation cephalosporins, macrolides, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones. \u00a0We even have vancomycin most of the time.<\/li>\n<li>Pain meds: \u00a0For mild pain, we carry ibuprofen and tylenol. We also have stronger IV pain meds for our surgical patients, and fractures.<\/li>\n<li>Blood pressure and diabetes medications. \u00a0We have oral calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and some beta-blockers. \u00a0We use metformin and glibencamide for diabetes control, and we also have insulin.<\/li>\n<li>Albuterol multi-dose inhalers. \u00a0These are key for our chronic asthma patients, and COPD patients. \u00a0We don&#8217;t have nebulized albuterol (which we&#8217;d like to have), but we can substitute these MDIs, and they work quite well.<\/li>\n<li>GI problems? \u00a0We&#8217;ve got proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec for example), and we even have Zofran for nausea and vomiting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Five medications we don&#8217;t have. \u00a0We are hoping that in time, our access to some of these meds will improve:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Fancy antibiotics. \u00a0Anti-pseudomonal penicillins like Timentin and Zosyn. \u00a0These are great for severe infections. \u00a0Also, we still lack a good IV first generation cephalosporin.<\/li>\n<li>Artesunate. \u00a0This is the WHO-recommended standard for IV treatment of severe malaria. \u00a0It is difficult to find however, and we rarely have it. \u00a0Instead, we use Quinine which is an acceptable but less desirable medication.<\/li>\n<li>Newer blood pressure and heart failure medications like Carvedilol. \u00a0 Also, newer diabetes meds like long-acting insulins.<\/li>\n<li>Low-molecular weight heparin. \u00a0Ever heard of Lovenox? \u00a0It makes treating deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism so much easier. \u00a0But alas, it is rarely available on the African market.<\/li>\n<li>IV calcium and sodium bicarbonate &#8211; rarely we will have these. \u00a0It does create problems managing a hyperkalemic patient or profoundly hypocalcemic patient. \u00a0We have other therapies that we can use though.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Others you are wondering about? \u00a0Ask in the comments and we&#8217;ll respond!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What kinds of medications are available at an African mission hospital, and from whom do you procure them? \u00a0These are [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":924,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[73,74],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-921","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-faq","category-medical-care"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>What?
