{"id":927,"date":"2013-10-10T13:46:34","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T13:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/?p=927"},"modified":"2013-10-10T13:46:34","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T13:46:34","slug":"hot-zone-in-soddo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/am\/hot-zone-in-soddo\/","title":{"rendered":"Hot Zone in Soddo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, we had some pediatric patients come in with upper respiratory symptoms. \u00a0A few of them had a rash and had been given antibiotics, so there was a thought that maybe it was a &#8220;drug-related rash.&#8221; \u00a0But it wasn&#8217;t long before a few more kids came in, and it was clear that this wasn&#8217;t a medication-induced rash. \u00a0Yep, this was measles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-929\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"photo 1\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical measles rash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_930\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-930\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-2-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Sometimes the spots coalesce into larger lesions like this one.\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sometimes the spots coalesce into larger lesions like this one.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long before our entire pediatric ward was full of measles patients. \u00a0We were in the middle of a genuine outbreak. \u00a0The feared complication of measles is pneumonia, and indeed most of the patients we were getting had it. \u00a0Many have them were requiring oxygen. \u00a0In the picture below, the machines on the floor are oxygen concentrators.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_931\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-931\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-21-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Pedi ward full of measles patients - most with pneumonia and on oxygen.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pedi ward full of measles patients &#8211; most with pneumonia and on oxygen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The health department was notified, and they began taking measures. \u00a0Much of the outbreak was centered on an orphanage down the street from us. \u00a0So we contacted them and gave them specific instructions. \u00a0First, isolate any kids that were showing symptoms. \u00a0Second, send any kids to the hospital that were showing signs of pneumonia or respiratory distress. \u00a0We took a trip down to the orphanage ourselves to see the patients who were not sent to the hospital and check on them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-932\" style=\"width: 251px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.soddo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/photo-4-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Mehret checking out one of the babies.\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Mehret checking out one of the babies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By God&#8217;s grace, the outbreak seems to be relenting. \u00a0Our hospital has admitted around 15 kids. \u00a0Sadly, a few of them have succumbed to the disease. \u00a0The thing about measles in outbreak settings, is that it affects the very young. \u00a0Children are vaccinated against this virus between nine months and one year of age. \u00a0So the most vulnerable are the babies less than nine months. \u00a0Formula-fed babies (like the orphans) are particularly vulnerable because they don&#8217;t get protective maternal antibodies. \u00a0Fortunately, some who were very sick are pulling through. \u00a0 The situation itself feels like a war zone. \u00a0Our doctors and our nurses are tired, but they are doing an amazing job &#8211; rising to the occasion and providing excellent care. \u00a0We praise God for using us in this situation, and hope to bring Him glory through it. \u00a0As it says in 1 Cor 15:58, &#8220;Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.&#8221; \u00a0Pray that we will be steadfast. \u00a0And that no more of these precious little ones will die.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing about situations like this, is that it stretches our thin resources to the maximum. \u00a0We don&#8217;t have enough oxygen concentrators. \u00a0We don&#8217;t have enough pulse oximeters. \u00a0And we can&#8217;t mechanically ventilate kids with severe pneumonia. \u00a0We hope to buy non-invasive ventilator machines, and perhaps one or two mechanical ventilators. \u00a0We&#8217;d love to be even better prepared the next time this happens. \u00a0Would you consider a donation today that would help us do that? \u00a0Just click donate in the upper right corner of the site. \u00a0Thanks for your support and prayers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, we had some pediatric patients come in with upper respiratory symptoms. \u00a0A few of them had a rash [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":934,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[74,79],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-927","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-medical-care","category-patient-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
